The only question I get more often than “what is it like being a woman in the beer industry?” is “what is yourfavourite beer?” Every media request that I receive includes questions like: Which do you think are the top 10 Canadian breweries? What are 5 recommended brands for patio season? Which new releases should we be seeking out? What do you think of X brand? Which breweries should we be keeping an eye out for? What are your top […]
The future of Ontario beer?
Posted April 9, 2013 | 1:15 am, by Mirella
Last month, I became a member of the Ontario Hop Growers Association. I also had the pleasure of attending their conference on Saturday, March 9th, where Québecois hop agronomist Julien Venne presented an advanced course in hop growing. The talk was fascinating and it was great to learn more about how to best select appropriate and relevant hop varieties to grow in Ontario. I’ve actually been following the growth of the local hop industry for a few years now, ever […]

This was one of the Ontario Craft Brewers Centre of Excellence Industry Choice Awards that were handed out at the first ever Ontario Craft Brewers Conference. Here’s what the awards were about: The goal of these industry awards is to recognize examples of excellence among small, medium and large organizations, supporting the craft brewing industry at the local, […]

The current issue of Food&Drink Magazine contains three tasty beer cocktails recipes that I formulated for the spring (p.53). Beer cocktails are a hot trend and I was delighted to have an opportunity to share a few recipes. Ontario residents can pick up a free copy of Food&Drink at their local LCBO. I thought I’d celebrate the occasion by sharing another one of my beer cocktail recipes online: Moustache 4.5 oz King Brewery Vienna Lager 1/4oz Crown Royal Rye Whisky 1/4oz Martini Rosso […]
Don’t believe everything you read
Posted April 6, 2012 | 10:31 pm, by Mirella
I just read this article online about a study that attributes “60% of deaths in Ontario” to “5 unhealthy habits” and I am very annoyed. Why is it that people in the media seems bent on making beer seem unhealthy? This article annoyed me for two reasons. The first is the way that the author lumped drinking in with smoking, stress, bad diet and lack of exercise, calling them all “unhealthy habits”. This is not right. Unlike smoking, stress, bad diet and […]

Some of you may have noticed a new button on the top right hand corner of the Beerology website that looks a little like this: I’m delighted to announce that the Beerology website is now available in French. I have always offered all of my services in both English and French and it’s great to, once again, have a website that reflects this. BTW: The French side of beerology is also a great place to pick up some French […]
The Canadian Cream Ale Puzzle
Posted September 13, 2011 | 1:43 am, by nadine
The cream ale is a defined historical style of beer. A cursory research on its character will point to a golden-coloured, light-flavoured, malty and refreshing ale. Historical notes will explain that ale breweries in the U.S. developed cream ales sometime in the 19th century in order to compete with the increasing popularity of lagers. The cream ale style is still quite popular in North America. Perhaps the best-known Canadian example is Sleeman Cream Ale, whose recipe can actually be traced […]
