Festive Beer Nog Float
Posted December 20, 2012 | 10:00 am, by Mirella
The holidays are fast approaching and so I thought it might be fun to share the recipe for one of my festive beer cocktails with you, since the traditional “beer nog” recipe that I posted last year was such a hit! This cocktail is actually more of a beer float. It was inspired by an online article I that read two years ago about the fact that it is impossible to make a beer cocktail with eggnog. The unfortunate truth is […]
The first Canadian Master Cicerone
Posted December 7, 2012 | 9:00 am, by Mirella
I am delighted to announce that I just became the first (and, for the time being, the only) Master CiceroneTM in Canada. I am one of only six people in North America to have earned this certification. I completed the Master CiceroneTM certification in Los Angeles this past October. It involved a series of exams that took place over the course of two days and included some intense taste testing as well as written and oral questioning about beer styles, draft systems, […]

Here’s what the awards were about: The goal of these industry awards is to recognize examples of excellence among small, medium and large organizations, supporting the craft brewing industry at the local, […]
Beer + Opera = a fantastic evening
Posted October 19, 2012 | 11:00 am, by Mirella
What could be more fun than a beer tasting set to music? Last month, with the help of my friend, opera singer Melanie Esseltine, I hosted the most unusual beer tasting I’ve put together so far… The beer tasting was called Hopera and each beer was paired with an operatic aria, duet or ensemble. It took over a year to make it happen, and although we thought it was a recipe for the ultimate evening, we weren’t sure how Torontoians would […]

During this season, we will continue to explore the fantastic beers of the Ontario Craft Brewers. Just like last year, each podcast will feature a different member of the OCB. This year, though, the focus of the podcasts is different. We will be talking about: Beer Ingredients Pairing Beer […]
The Grid

…“A lot of people appreciate the opera and local food and wine, but beer has somehow not entered the picture,” she says. Of course, Amato makes her living turning people on to suds. She’s hoping this event will transform those opera-loving oenophiles into unequivocal barley-heads…

photo by Jennifer Roberts A few articles were published about me and my work over the summer and I thought I’d take a moment to share! Last Friday, the Calgary Herald printed a fantastic piece by Laura Brehaut about my work in general, as well as the author’s experience participating in the Girl’s Guided Beer Tour that I ran at the Toronto Festival of Beer and Queer Beer this year. In July, Natalie Goldenbergfife, one of the guests at the […]
Beer and Food Pairing
Posted July 26, 2012 | 10:00 am, by Mirella
If there’s one thing that I might enjoy more than a straight beer tasting, it’s an opportunity to explore beer and food pairing. This year I’ve had the pleasure of working with two different chefs as part of the 2011-2012 season of the Ontario Brewer Podcast, pairing local craft beer with a range of foods. It’s been a delightful experience. Why Beer and Food Pairing is Fun Here are my two favourite things about food pairing: Even though there are a […]
