Upper Canada Brewing Company was the first microbrewery in Toronto. Its many employees worked tirelessly to create a wide variety of flavourful products and to introduce drinkers to the world of craft beer. The brewery was located on Atlantic Ave. in downtown Toronto from 1985 until 1998 when it was bought by Sleeman Breweries. The downtown plant was soon closed, and its army of dedicated and enthusiastic employees scattered. A close look at the Ontario brewing industry reveals that they […]

“What’s amazing to me is that San Diego and this whole area, Southern California, less than ten years ago was considered an absolute wasteland, and Northern California was what it was all about. Southern California was way behind and then suddenly: BOOM!” These are the words of renowned Brooklyn Brewery brewmaster, Garrett Oliver, who was visiting San Diego for the Craft Brewers’ Conference last April. The San Diego brewing scene is definitely in full swing. The past few years have […]

Pink Boots Society Meets at CBC

When Tonya Cornett stepped up to the stage and accepted her award for 2008 Champion Brewery: Small Brewpub Category, at the World Beer Cup in San Diego, I felt myself jump up to my feet as I began to cheer. Behind me, Laura Ulrich called out “she’s a pink-booter”. I could tell, in that moment, that we were both thinking the same thing: She’s a very talented brewer and she’s one of us! As of 1pm that day, I too […]
A Taste of the ‘American Renaissance’

On April 17th this year, a hundred and thirty of us piled onto a bus from the Craft Brewers’ Conference in San Diego to attend a dinner that featured The Lost Abbey beers. Created by Port Brewing Co, The Lost Abbey is a brand it reserves for Belgian-style beers. The dinner that evening would also celebrate the launch of Isabelle Proximus ale, apparently brewed by “Allaverdogportrush”… We arrived at the brewery around seven, to find rows of candle-lit tables, impeccably […]
Let it Flow

As the snow begins to melt after a long winter and the days become warmer, sap begins to flow from the Canadian sugar maple. It is sugar-season in Canada! Sap isn’t the only maple product flowing in Ontario this spring. For a few years now, three Ontario Craft Brewers have been releasing maple beers to celebrate the thaw… A quirky little adjunct Canada produces 83% of the world’s maple syrup. This quintessentially Canadian ingredient is used to flavour a […]
A World of Beer

I thought I’d beat the crowd by arriving at the Montréal ‘Mondial de la Bière’ festival at noon on a Friday. Imagine my surprise when I opened the doors that lead from Métro Bonaventure to Gare Windsor and heard the rumble of a crowd: the festival was already in full swing! Climbing the stairs up to the festival, I thought: oh, great! Now I’m going to be elbowing through a crowd of drunken people, and trying not to trip over […]

Women are also becoming more involved in the brewing industry – everything from sales and marketing, to quality control and even brewing. Still, old stereotypes die hard, says Mirella Amato, a Toronto-based beer judge and speaker. At the Toronto Festival of Beer last week, Amato presented two women-only beer tours…
