Beer + Opera = a fantastic evening

Posted October 19, 2012 | 11:00 am, by Mirella

What could be more fun than a beer tasting set to music? Last month, with the help of my friend, opera singer Melanie Esseltine, I hosted the most unusual beer tasting I’ve put together so far… The beer tasting was called Hopera and each beer was paired with an operatic aria, duet or ensemble. It took over a year to make it happen, and although we thought it was a recipe for the ultimate evening, we weren’t sure how Torontoians would […]

Posted August 16, 2012 | 2:05 pm, by Mirella

photo by Jennifer Roberts A few articles were published about me and my work over the summer and I thought I’d take a moment to share! Last Friday, the Calgary Herald printed a fantastic piece by Laura Brehaut about my work in general, as well as the author’s experience participating in the Girl’s Guided Beer Tour that I ran at the Toronto Festival of Beer and Queer Beer this year. In July, Natalie Goldenbergfife, one of the guests at the […]

Beer and Food Pairing

Posted July 26, 2012 | 10:00 am, by Mirella

If there’s one thing that I might enjoy more than a straight beer tasting, it’s an opportunity to explore beer and food pairing. This year I’ve had the pleasure of working with two different chefs as part of the 2011-2012 season of the Ontario Brewer Podcast, pairing local craft beer with a range of foods. It’s been a delightful experience. Why Beer and Food Pairing is Fun Here are my two favourite things about food pairing: Even though there are a […]

Draught issues…

Posted June 28, 2012 | 12:40 pm, by Mirella

I was down in the U.S. last week, completing an Advance Draught Training course with Micro Matic. My thinking was that if I’m at a pub or restaurant to consult on the beer list and food pairing, it would be nice if I had the knowledge and equipment necessary to troubleshoot a fussy/foaming tap. The course was excellent and I learned a lot. The class was not about troubleshooting, it was about understanding how to install and maintain a balanced […]

It’s not the same when there is no brewery…

Posted June 13, 2012 | 3:57 pm, by Mirella

I’m off to do some consulting for a new Ontario craft brewery today. The brewery is called Sleeping Giant Brewing Co. and it’s in Thunder Bay. I’m very excited to visit a new brewery and no matter how many breweries I’ve seen, I never get tired of brewery visits. Every brewery is different, every brewer is different and, as a result, every beer lineup is different. In the world of brewing, few things are more exciting than tasting a new […]

On judging beer competitions

Posted June 5, 2012 | 7:26 pm, by Mirella

To say that I’ve been doing quite a bit of judging over the past few weeks would be an understatement. The first week of May, I was in San Diego, judging for the World Beer Cup then the following week I proctored a BJCP exam in Montréal, along with fellow National Level BJCP Judge Nathan McNutt, who brews at Réservoir. The week after that I judged a homebrew competition for the Amateur Winemakers of Ontario and finally, last week, I was one […]

Beer Cocktails, Anyone?

Posted May 8, 2012 | 1:31 am, by Mirella

The current issue of Food&Drink Magazine contains three tasty beer cocktails recipes that I formulated for the spring (p.53). Beer cocktails are a hot trend and I was delighted to have an opportunity to share a few recipes. Ontario residents can pick up a free copy of Food&Drink at their local LCBO. I thought I’d celebrate the occasion by sharing another one of my beer cocktail recipes online: Moustache 4.5 oz King Brewery Vienna Lager 1/4oz Crown Royal Rye Whisky 1/4oz Martini Rosso […]
