Raise A Glass!

Posted September 13, 2011 | 1:01 am, by nadine

When entertaining at home, choosing the right beer glass may seem like a daunting task. There are a wide variety of beer glasses on the market. They seem to come in all shapes and sizes. Some of them, like the Pilsner glass, are closely linked with a distinct style. Others, for example the Nonic and Tulip pints, seem to be variations on a theme. The fact is that each of these different shapes is designed to enhance a specific beer’s […]

A Homebrewing Legacy

Posted September 13, 2011 | 1:00 am, by nadine

Making beer at home is not a hobby that you hear about very often and few people are aware of the positive influence that homebrewing has had on the craft beer movement in Ontario. The truth is that a number of professional brewers in the province started off as homebrewers and were active members of The Canadian Amateur Brewers Association (CABA), which will be celebrating its twenty-fifth anniversary next year. Paul Dickey, now the brewer for Pepperwood Bistro in Burlington, […]

Italy is a country that is known for its wine production. Wine is available everywhere, and there are a number of specialized shops, labeled ‘Enoteca’, where customers can choose from a wide selection of wines. While perusing the bottles at a local enoteca, visitors to Italy might be surprised to stumble upon a few elegant and distinctive 750ml bottle labeled: Birra (beer). Sugar & Spice Everything Nice

Posted September 13, 2011 | 12:53 am, by nadine

This past February, I found myself standing in front of a booth at Pianeta Birra, the beer trade show in Rimini, Italy, sipping a light-bodied beer that tasted like fresh lemons. The beer in question was Birrificio Karma’s Lemon Ale and the brewer, Mario Cipriano, was explaining to me that this beer was a tribute to the Sorrento region, which is famous for its lemons…  Cipriano’s beer was one of many unusual offerings that I had the opportunity to sample […]

Allons voir si la bière est bonne…

Posted September 13, 2011 | 12:48 am, by nadine

Still Going Strong…

Posted September 13, 2011 | 12:46 am, by nadine

Upper Canada Brewing Company was the first microbrewery in Toronto. Its many employees worked tirelessly to create a wide variety of flavourful products and to introduce drinkers to the world of craft beer. The brewery was located on Atlantic Ave. in downtown Toronto from 1985 until 1998 when it was bought by Sleeman Breweries. The downtown plant was soon closed, and its army of dedicated and enthusiastic employees scattered. A close look at the Ontario brewing industry reveals that they […]

Beer Bus Adventures

Posted September 13, 2011 | 12:37 am, by nadine

In Europe, where there is a rich beer history, many cities offer at least one regular tour that includes brewery visits. These tours are a convenient way to discover a city’s brewing history and sample an array of beers without having to worry about transportation or maps. Beer bus tours are also an environmentally friendly option and circumvent the whole ‘drink or drive’ dilemma. Travelers in the U.S. will be happy to learn that a number of passionate and entrepreneurial […]

Beyond the India Pale Ale

Posted September 13, 2011 | 12:15 am, by nadine

“What’s amazing to me is that San Diego and this whole area, Southern California, less than ten years ago was considered an absolute wasteland, and Northern California was what it was all about. Southern California was way behind and then suddenly: BOOM!” These are the words of renowned Brooklyn Brewery brewmaster, Garrett Oliver, who was visiting San Diego for the Craft Brewers’ Conference last April. The San Diego brewing scene is definitely in full swing. The past few years have […]

La bière à Toronto

Posted September 13, 2011 | 12:12 am, by nadine
