I’m excited to announce the launch of my new online beer and food pairing course. Designed for industry professionals, Mastering Beer & Food Pairing brought to you by Beerology® is an easy to follow, step-by-step guide that will show you how to master pairing beer with food. Hopera wins!
Posted September 26, 2014 | 10:46 am, by Mirella
I’m delighted to announce that the third edition of Hopera, which took place on September 17th & 18th this year, won the Drinker’s Choice award for Best Event of Toronto Beer Week 2014! This was a ‘fun and informal survey’ and beer drinkers were encouraged to vote online. Our venue for the event, Habits Gastropub, also won a Toronto Beer Week 2014 Drinker’s Choice Award in the Best Bar/Pub/Restaurant category – how awesome is that? I’m very proud of this event, as I explained […]
Beer in New Zealand
Posted November 29, 2013 | 11:00 am, by Mirella
I was very happy to be invited down to Dunedin, New Zealand, to give a talk on ‘the science of beer’ as a part of the Science Teller Festival run by the University of Otago last month. This is only the second time I’ve been invited to give a talk outside of North America – the last one being in 2010, when I co-hosted a guided tasting in Italy with my maestro, Lorenzo Dabove. I was particularly excited to have […]
Beer + Opera = a fantastic evening
Posted October 19, 2012 | 11:00 am, by Mirella
What could be more fun than a beer tasting set to music? Last month, with the help of my friend, opera singer Melanie Esseltine, I hosted the most unusual beer tasting I’ve put together so far… The beer tasting was called Hopera and each beer was paired with an operatic aria, duet or ensemble. It took over a year to make it happen, and although we thought it was a recipe for the ultimate evening, we weren’t sure how Torontoians would […]

It could be about more than just beer…

I attended the 25th anniversary of Le Cheval Blanc brewpub in Montréal last weekend and it was fantastic. Le Cheval Blanc is the oldest craft brewery in Québec and a great place to visit if ever you’re in town. When I heard about what Le Cheval Blanc was doing to celebrate this landmark anniversary, I absolutely had to go. Of course, the brewer made all kinds of tasty treats to celebrate (these beers are being released at the brewpub throughout […]
Beerology Off-Flavour Workshop featured in the Grid!
Posted February 23, 2012 | 1:53 pm, by Mirella
There’s a fun write-up in the Grid about the Off-Flavour Beer Tasting Workshops that I’ve been running since last fall. As I mentioned in a previous post, these off-flavour sessions are a great way for beer enthusiasts, brewers, homebrewers and people who work with or around beer to learn about off-flavours. What is an off-flavour? An off-flavour is an aroma or flavour in beer that should not be there. Sometimes it is one that would be alright if it wasn’t […]
The Grid
Posted February 23, 2012 | 1:22 pm, by Mirella
“I brought along something that makes beer taste like dirty draught lines, in case people want to geek out later,” Mirella Amato tells her class of nine students on an early February night. A few of them look up, nod, then return their noses to the small plastic cups they’re cradling in their hands…
